Labor Day is Monday, September 7 this year, which makes the long weekend September 4–7 — the unofficial closing ceremony of Wisconsin summer. Cabins get one last full house, boats get one last weekend on the water, and every grill in Jackson County gets lit at least twice.
It's also the second-busiest holiday weekend of the year for our fleet, with a twist July 4th doesn't have: it lands squarely on top of college move-in season, which draws on the exact same minivans. Two demand spikes, one fleet.
Family cabin or lake weekend: the 7-passenger minivan ($78/day + $0.10/mile) takes the family, the coolers, the duffels, and the dog crate in one load. It's the most-requested vehicle for this weekend every year.
Big group, one destination: the 15-passenger van ($135/day + $0.10/mile) keeps a reunion-sized crew together — nobody misses the turn, nobody needs the address texted twice.
Couple's getaway or a guest flying in: an intermediate ($55/day local) or full-size car ($65/day local) does the job for less. Picking up visiting family from the La Crosse or Eau Claire airports? That round trip fits inside the local tier's 100-mile daily allowance — barely — so count your miles or take unlimited.
Gravel roads and boat launches: the Ford Edge SUV (from $80/day) adds cargo height and ground clearance for the rougher route to the cabin.
Where's the weekend taking you? A cabin within an hour of Black River Falls stays comfortably inside the local tier (100 miles/day on cars and SUVs). Heading further — Hayward, Minocqua, Door County, the Twin Cities — take the unlimited daily tier ($75 intermediate / $85 full-size / $100 SUV) and forget the odometer.
Stretching the trip past a week? Every rental of 7+ days includes unlimited mileage automatically — sometimes adding two days to the rental costs less than the mileage it saves.
Normal weekends, a few days' notice is plenty. Labor Day is different: holiday demand plus move-in weekend demand hit the same two weeks. The minivans go first, the 15-passenger van usually has exactly one weekend home, and by the last week of August the choices get thin.
This post goes up almost four weeks out. The comfortable booking window closes around August 21 — after that it's whatever's left on the lot.
