The 7-passenger minivan is the workhorse of our fleet. It's the vehicle that sits between "a car isn't big enough" and "a 15-passenger van is too much." For most families of 5 to 7, it's the right rental, and it's the one we recommend most often. Here's the full picture — what it fits, what it doesn't, what it costs, and when to pick it.

What you actually get

The 7-passenger minivan is a three-row vehicle:

  • Row 1 — Driver and front passenger, with center console storage.
  • Row 2 — Two captain's chairs or a bench (depending on model), each with car-seat anchors.
  • Row 3 — Three-across bench seating for adults or older kids.

Sliding side doors on both sides — the single biggest convenience advantage over an SUV. You can park tight in a busy lot and the doors still open. Grandparents can step in instead of climbing up. Car seats are easier to load. The rear hatch opens wide for luggage, strollers, hockey bags, or grocery runs.

Cargo space, honestly

This is the part most rental sites are vague about. Here's the real-world breakdown:

  • All 7 seats in use — Cargo space behind the third row holds about 4–5 standard carry-on suitcases or roughly the equivalent of a sedan trunk. Tight for a week of vacation luggage for 7 people; fine for groceries, sports gear, or a day trip.
  • Third row folded down — The cargo area roughly doubles. Plenty for a family of 4–5 to pack for a week-long cabin trip including coolers and bags.
  • Second and third rows down — Furniture-mover territory. Mid-sized couch, full bed mattress, or a serious hardware-store haul.

Who it's for

Use Case Why a Minivan Wins
Family of 5–7One vehicle instead of two. Sliding doors. Car-seat-friendly.
Multi-generational day tripsStep-in entry for grandparents. Three rows so the cousins can come.
Airport pickup with luggage4–6 adults plus suitcases all in one vehicle.
Youth sports team or church groupSmaller groups that don't need a 15-passenger van.
Insurance replacementFamily-of-six gets the kids to school while their SUV is at the body shop.
Moving smaller itemsBoth back rows fold flat — cheaper than a U-Haul for small loads.

Who it's not for

  • Groups of 8–15 — That's a 15-passenger van. See our 7 & 15 passenger van guide.
  • Solo travelers or couples on a budget trip — An intermediate car at $55/day local will be cheaper and gets better mileage.
  • Towing or serious off-road — Minivans aren't built for that. We don't rent for towing.

What it costs

The 7-passenger minivan has two pricing options:

Rate Price Mileage
Daily$78/day + $0.10/miPer-mile charge applies
Weekly (7+ days)$450/weekUnlimited mileage included

The crossover point: if you're going to put more than about 220 miles on the daily rate, the weekly often comes out ahead even before factoring in the extra days. For a real cost comparison, see our daily vs. weekly breakdown.

Minivan vs. SUV — the honest answer

Some customers ask why we don't stock 3-row SUVs instead. Practical reasons:

  • The third row in most SUVs is smaller than a minivan's. Adults complain. Kids fight.
  • SUVs don't have sliding doors. This matters more than people expect — in tight parking lots, with car seats, with elderly passengers.
  • Minivans have more cargo space behind the third row. Real difference if you're traveling with all 7 seats in use.
  • Fuel economy is comparable or better than a comparable-size SUV.

If you absolutely need AWD or higher ground clearance for a specific trip, call and we'll talk through whether we can match it from our cars or whether you need something we don't stock.

What you need to rent one

Same as any rental:

  • Valid U.S. driver's license
  • Major credit card or bank-issued debit card linked to a checking account
  • Proof of auto insurance (policy number and expiration date)

Frequently Asked Questions

$78/day plus $0.10/mile, or $450/week with unlimited mileage included. For trips of 6+ days or 220+ miles, the weekly is usually the better deal.

Yes — standard LATCH anchors in the second row. Confirm at pickup if you need a specific configuration; we'll show you the anchor points.

Tight. With all 7 seats in use, cargo behind the third row is roughly sedan-trunk size. For a week of full luggage for 7, you'll need to use roof-top storage or fold the third row (drops capacity to 5).

Sliding doors, larger usable third row, more cargo behind the third row, and similar or better fuel economy. The minivan is the better practical pick for most families. SUVs win only if you specifically need AWD or off-road capability.

No. Van weekly rentals (both 7-passenger and 15-passenger) include unlimited mileage as a flat-rate package.
