Every August the same scene plays out in driveways across Jackson County: a sedan with its trunk open, a pile of dorm gear that clearly isn't going to fit, and a parent doing the mental math on a second 120-mile round trip.
Move-in season across western Wisconsin lands in late August and the first week of September, and the fix for the driveway math problem is simple: rent the right vehicle for one day and do it in one trip.
Our 7-passenger minivan ($78/day + $0.10/mile) is the vehicle we hand over most often for move-in runs. Fold the third row, tumble the second, and you've got a cargo bay that takes a mini-fridge, a futon, a desk chair, the tote-bin tower, and the student — with the sliding doors making the twentieth armload easier than the first.
A typical dorm load that would take a sedan three trips fits in a minivan once. That's the whole pitch.
Second-year students moving into a furnished apartment, or anyone whose "dorm room" is really four totes and a laptop, can size down. The Ford Edge SUV (from $80/day) offers a tall, open cargo bay with the rear seats folded, and a full-size car ($65/day) handles a light load with the seats down.

For cars and SUVs: every run on that list except a short local errand blows past the 100-mile daily cap on the local tier, so take the unlimited daily rate ($75 intermediate / $85 full-size / $100 SUV) and don't think about the odometer again.
For the minivan: daily rentals are $0.10/mile from mile one, so the mileage is just arithmetic — an Eau Claire round trip adds about $11, Madison about $25. Even the Madison run totals right around $103 for the day. One trip, done.
Move-in weekends stack on top of end-of-summer vacations, and the minivans are the most popular vehicle in the fleet for both. Two to three weeks of lead time is the comfortable window — if move-in day is the last weekend of August, that means calling in mid-August at the latest.
