For years, "can I rent an SUV?" was a question we had to answer with "not yet." That changed this summer. Our SUV/AWD class now runs three vehicles deep: two Ford Edge SUVs and an all-wheel-drive Subaru Outback, all kept on the lot at N5856 WI-54 in Black River Falls.

The Edge is a midsize, five-seat SUV — the practical middle of the SUV world. You sit higher than in a sedan, which makes highway miles and rural sightlines noticeably easier. Behind the rear seats there's real cargo room for luggage, gear, or a week's worth of supplies, and the rear seats fold when a trip turns into a hauling job.
It's the vehicle we point people toward when a full-size car is almost enough but not quite: more space than the trunk of a sedan, more comfortable over a long day than a minivan, and easier to park than either of our vans.
Cargo-heavy trips. Coolers, camping gear, a dog crate, sports equipment — if the trunk math on a sedan looks tight, the Edge's open cargo bay solves it. (Hauling bikes and kayaks for a crowd? That's minivan or van territory.)
Gravel and rural roads. Hunting land access, river landings, back-forty driveways — the extra ground clearance earns its keep where a sedan scrapes.
Long highway days. Higher seating, bigger glass, more relaxed ride. A Twin Cities or Madison run in the Edge is an easier day than the same miles in an intermediate car.
Weather. When the forecast turns, ask for the AWD Subaru Outback specifically — all-wheel-drive traction for snow, ice, and mud season. Even in July, western Wisconsin gravel after a thunderstorm makes the case.
Around-town errands, an insurance replacement while your sedan's in the body shop, a solo work trip — the intermediate car at $55/day does the same job for $25 less per day. And if you're moving more than five people, skip the SUV entirely and go straight to the 7-passenger minivan.
