In Jackson County, opening weekend of the gun deer season is practically a holiday. This year the nine-day season opens the Saturday before Thanksgiving — November 21 — and that means camps filling up across the Black River State Forest and the county's public and private land. If your crew is coming in from out of town, or your truck is already spoken for, here's how renters handle the logistics.

One van for the whole camp

When five or six hunters are converging from Madison, the Twin Cities, or the Fox Valley, the 15-passenger van ($135/day + $0.10/mile, $750/week unlimited) gets everyone to camp together with room for bags, coolers, and blaze orange. A full nine-day stretch is where the weekly rate earns its keep.

Smaller group? The 7-passenger minivan ($450/week unlimited) handles a crew of four with gear.

AWD for the back roads

The last mile to camp is usually the hard one: gravel, two-tracks, and November slop. Our SUV & AWD class — the all-wheel-drive Subaru Outback and two Ford Edge SUVs — runs $80/day or $480/week for local renters, with unlimited mileage. The non-local rate is $100/day or $600/week, plus a per-mile charge. Call 715-396-1466 for the per-mile rate. Local means residents of Black River Falls and Jackson County, WI. Ask for the Outback specifically if AWD matters; there's one.

Before you load up

  • Firearms: transport cased and unloaded, per Wisconsin law — same as your own vehicle.
  • Game stays out of the rental: harvested deer and other game can't be transported in our rental vehicles — no exceptions. Plan on a camp truck, trailer, or a processor pickup to get your deer out of the woods.
  • Mud: it happens. Knock the worst of it off boots and gear — we appreciate it.

Book early — really

Opener week lands right before Thanksgiving, so hunters and holiday travelers are chasing the same vehicles. The van and the AWD Outback are usually the first to go. If your camp dates are set, call now.
