First frost is here, and it won't be long before the first real snow on Highway 54. Every year that's when the calls change from "what's the cheapest car?" to "do you have anything with all-wheel drive?" The answer is yes — but only one, so here's how to decide whether you need it.

What's in the class

Our SUV & AWD class is two Ford Edge SUVs and one all-wheel-drive Subaru Outback. Rates are the same across the class:

  • $80/day local (100 miles/day included) or $100/day unlimited
  • $480/week local or $600/week unlimited

If AWD specifically matters to you, ask for the Outback by name when you book.

When AWD is worth it

  • Unplowed or gravel roads: hunting land, cabins, and farm driveways that don't see a plow first.
  • Early-morning highway runs after overnight snow, before crews have been through.
  • Long trips with uncertain weather — a holiday drive to the Twin Cities or Madison when the forecast is iffy.
  • Peace of mind for a visiting family member who isn't used to Wisconsin winters.

When a car is still smarter

For plowed town driving and the interstate on a clear day, a full-size car at $65/day with good tires handles winter fine and saves you money. AWD helps you get going; it doesn't help you stop. Slow down either way.

Why to book early

There's one AWD Outback. Once the first storm hits the forecast, it goes fast — and deer season and Thanksgiving week stack on top of each other in late November. If you know you'll want AWD for a specific week, call now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Our SUV/AWD class includes an all-wheel-drive Subaru Outback. Ask for it by name when you book, since there's one in the fleet.

$80/day local (100 miles/day) or $100/day unlimited; $480/week local or $600/week unlimited.

Not always. For plowed roads and clear interstate days, a car with good tires works fine. AWD helps most on unplowed, gravel, or rural roads and after fresh snow.

As early as possible. Deer season and Thanksgiving week overlap in late November, and there's only one AWD Outback.
