How much we hold, how long it takes to come back, and why paying with debit costs you nothing extra.
Nobody likes a surprise at the counter. The two that catch renters most often at big chains are an unexpectedly large deposit hold and a "sorry, we don't take debit" moment. Here's exactly how both work at Riverside — no asterisks.
Every rental has a refundable deposit taken at pickup:
Not sure which applies to you? Ask when you call — we'll tell you before you ever walk in. The deposit is the same whether you're renting an intermediate car or the 15-passenger van.
We accept a bank-issued debit card linked to a checking account for both the deposit and the final payment. No credit check, no requirement to own a credit card. That matters for a lot of our renters — especially insurance replacement customers who didn't plan on needing a car this week.
One thing to know: when a deposit sits on a debit card, your bank controls how fast the hold releases after the rental ends. Plan on 3 to 7 business days depending on your bank. We release it on our end when the vehicle comes back; the bank does the rest.
A 3% surcharge applies to credit card transactions only. It's disclosed before you pay, every time. It never applies to debit cards or prepaid cards.
And to be clear about the rates themselves: the prices on our Fleet & Rates page are single posted prices — not "cash prices" with a markup for everyone else. Pay with debit and you pay exactly the posted rate.
Along with the card, bring a valid U.S. driver's license and proof of auto insurance showing your policy number and expiration date. Our first-timer’s guide walks through all three.
A local renter takes a full-size car for a week at $390 (local mileage). They pay with a debit card: $390 plus the $300 refundable deposit, no surcharge. The same rental on a credit card is $390 plus 3%. Either way, the deposit comes back after return.
