If you've rented from a local business, stayed at an independent hotel, eaten at a family-owned restaurant, or used any small business in your community — leaving them a Google review is one of the most useful things you can do. It costs nothing, takes under two minutes, and has a real, measurable impact on whether that business shows up when someone searches for what they offer.

We're going to walk through exactly how to do it. And yes — we'll be direct about the fact that as a small business ourselves, we'd genuinely appreciate reviews from people who've rented from us at Riverside Auto Rental. But the process works for any local business you want to support.

Why Google reviews matter so much for small businesses

When someone searches "car rental near me" or "van rental Black River Falls," Google decides which businesses to show in the Map Pack — the three local listings that appear at the top of the results with a map. The businesses in those three spots get the vast majority of clicks.

One of the strongest signals Google uses to rank those three spots is reviews — both the number of them and the rating. A local independent business with 25 genuine reviews and a 4.8 rating will consistently outrank a business with zero reviews, even if the zero-review business has a better website, more accurate information, and a longer history.

For national chains like Enterprise or Budget, reviews aren't a problem — they have hundreds of them automatically from high customer volume. For a family-owned business that's been operating since 1983 and just recently set up its Google Business Profile, reviews need to be actively asked for. Most satisfied customers never think to leave one unless someone asks.

How to leave a Google review on your phone

1. Open Google Maps

Open the Google Maps app on your iPhone or Android phone. If you don't have it, you can also use Google Search in your mobile browser.

2. Search for the business

Type the business name in the search bar. For us, search "Riverside Auto Rental Black River Falls" — be specific so you get the right listing.

3. Tap the listing, then "Reviews"

Tap on the business card that appears at the bottom of the screen. Scroll down until you see the Reviews section. Tap "Write a review."

You'll be asked to sign in with your Google account if you aren't already. Select your star rating (1–5 stars), write a sentence or two about your experience, and tap Post. That's it.

How to leave a Google review on a desktop computer

  1. Go to google.com and search for the business name.
  2. Look at the right side of the results page — you'll see the business's Knowledge Panel with their address, hours, and photos.
  3. Scroll down in that panel until you see the star rating and a button that says "Write a review."
  4. Click it, sign in to your Google account if prompted, leave your rating and comments, and click Post.

What makes a helpful review

You don't need to write a paragraph. A short, honest review is more valuable than a long vague one. A few things that make reviews genuinely useful to both the business and future customers:

  • Mention what you used the business for — "rented a 15-passenger van for our church trip" tells future customers more than "great place!"
  • Note anything that stood out — quick turnaround, fair pricing, friendly staff, easy process
  • Be specific about location if relevant — "coming from Tomah, the drive was easy and worth it" helps other nearby customers make decisions

Do I need a Gmail account?

Yes — Google reviews require a free Google account. If you don't have one, you can create one at accounts.google.com in a few minutes. You don't need to use it for email — it just needs to exist for the review to post. Reviews can't be submitted without an account.

A note from Riverside Auto Rental

We've been serving Black River Falls and western Wisconsin since 1983. Our Google Business Profile is newly set up — and right now, we have zero reviews. That puts us at a real disadvantage compared to national chains when people search for car or van rentals in our area, even though we've been a trusted community business for over 40 years.

If you've rented from us — whether it was recently or years ago — we'd genuinely appreciate a Google review. It doesn't need to be long. A rating and one honest sentence about your experience would mean a lot, and it helps other drivers in the region find us when they need a vehicle.
